Pterodactyls, by Nicky Silver, is about a really screwed up, abusive, denile ridden family that all end up dead, usually by their own personal modes of denile. The show turned out pretty good.. i hope you all enjoy!

Amazon.com has sparked outrage after removing books the online retailer deems "adult content" from its sales rankings to make the site more family friendly. The problem? Gay and lesbian books, including the children's tome Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman and a biography of Ellen DeGeneres, were de-listed.

Uh, I'd hardly slap Heather Has Two Mommies or anything written by or about Ellen DeGeneres as adult content, but clearly, Amazon.com simply labeled any book with gay or lesbian content as being adult in nature.

FYI: Titles such as Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson; The Dictionary of Homophobia: A Global History of Gay & Lesbian Experience edited by Louis-George Tin; and Radclyffe Hills' The Well of Loneliness were also among the hundreds of gay and lesbian books that were de-listed.

Now Amazon.com didn't stop selling these de-listed books. As noted above, the online retailer removed them from its sales rankings, which is not only a slap in the face to the LGBT community but is actually quite damaging for book sales as shoppers are oftentimes influenced by sales rankings.

Amazon.com insists that it didn't intentionally remove gay and lesbian titles from its sales rankings. A spokesperson for the company blames a computer "glitch" and says it will be fixed.
I believe that Amazon.com didn't purposely set out to censor gay and lesbian books. Still, the incident is disturbing because apparently someone at Amazon.com somewhere along the line must have plugged the keywords "gay" and "lesbian" into the program that removed adult content from Amazon.com's sales rankings, and it went unchecked.

Meanwhile, heterosexually-themed books with explicit sexual content including Playboy: The Complete Centerfolds and the graphic novel Lost Girls by Alan Moore were not de-listed.
So readers, what do you make of this controversy? Do you believe Amazon.com's claim that it unintentionally rated gay and lesbian books as adult content, and even if you do, does that make this incident any less upsetting?

The Gay City News reports that at least 27 men were arrested for prostitution in eight porn shops in Manhattan in 2008. Since 2004 there have been 52 such arrests in eight difference businesses.

According to a statement by the group, the arrest is usually set up so that an attractive younger officer is sent out to approach middle-aged gay men. The officer allegedly entices the man to have sex. If the man agrees, the undercover officer says he wanted to pay the man for sexual favors, and then, before the man can accept or reject the transaction, he is surrounded by police to make an arrest.

I am all for change. I mean really, do you know me?? I am all for fixing our economy. I am all for helping people stay in their homes. But.... how? How is the problem going to get fixed if all we're doing is throwing money (we do not have) at the problem? It's much like when a theatre production comes across a problem: the theatre with tons of money will just throw some at the issue until it goes away; the theatre with no money will figure out how the problem began and what steps need to be done (or re-done) to solve it.

Unfortunately, our country is not a theatre (although, sometimes....). But I do not see why we can't take the time to really see what went wrong and how we can fix it at the core level, and not just superficially (our economy is not a bum caster on a platform).

I don't really have an answer. I hope that our new people at the top do.... but.... i'm not really all that confident.

The day after thanksgiving, a person is trampled to DEATH at a Wal-mart because of greed. Is that irony? I dont know... but is incredibly depressing. The story from he New York Times is below.

A Wal-Mart employee in suburban New York died after he was trampled by a crush of shoppers who tore down the front doors and thronged into the store early Friday morning, turning the annual rite of post-Thanksgiving bargain hunting into a Hobbesian frenzy.

At 4:55 a.m., just five minutes before the doors were set to open, a crowd of 2,000 anxious shoppers started pushing, shoving and piling against the locked sliding glass doors of the Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, N.Y., Nassau County police said. The shoppers broke the doors off their hinges and surged in, toppling a 34-year-old temporary employee, Jdimypai Damour of Jamaica, Queens, who had been waiting with other workers in the store’s entryway.

People did not stop to help the employee as he lay on the ground, and they pushed against other Wal-Mart workers who were trying to aid Mr. Damour. The crowd kept running into the store even after the police arrived, jostling and pushing officers who were trying to perform CPR, the police said.

“They were like a stampede,” said Nassau Det. Lt. Michael Fleming. “Hundreds of people walked past him, over him or around him.”

Mr. Damour was taken from the Wal-Mart to nearby Franklin Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., the police said. His exact cause of death has not been determined.

The police said that three other shoppers were injured and a 28-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant was taken to the hospital for observation.

One shopper, Kimberly Cribbs, said she was standing near the back of the crowd at around 5 a.m. on Friday when people started rushing into the store. She said several people were knocked to the ground, and parents had to grab their children by the hand to keep them from being caught in the crush.

“They were falling all over each other,” she said. “It was terrible.”

Crowds began building outside the Wal-Mart at 9 p.m. Thursday and grew throughout the night, as eager shoppers queued up in a line that filled the sidewalk and stretched toward the boundary fence of the Green Acres Mall.

At 3:30 a.m., store employees called the Nassau police to report that the crowd was growing quickly, the police said. Officers came by to try to organize the line, but were called away to a Circuit City, a Best Buy and a B.J.’s Wholesale Club nearby, to deal with crowds there.
A half-dozen Wal-Mart employees lined up in the entryway trying to hold back the crowd by pushing against the locked sliding doors, but they were overwhelmed by the force of the crowd, Lieutenant Fleming said.

As the doors snapped open and people streamed in, several people fell on top of one another. The 34-year-old employee who died was at the bottom of the pile, the police said.
On Friday, Wal-Mart released a statement saying that the man who was killed had been working for Wal-Mart through a temp agency. The company called the death “a tragic situation,” and said it was working with police.

“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” Wal-Mart said in a statement.

Lieutenant Fleming said that the store “could have done more” to prevent the melee.
“I’ve heard other people call this an accident, but it’s not,” he said. “This certainly was foreseeable.”

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a particular thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is the fact that they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.

I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices is antithetical to Feminism which for me is part of one story -- connected to saving the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.

I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the most dangerous choices of my lifetime, and should this country chose those candidates the fall-out may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many areas that America may never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the impact that duo would have on the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this is not a joke. In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the inept, the bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.

Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor. In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets better or evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God's plan. She is fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The earth, in Palin's view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be taken and plundered. Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As she said herself of the Iraqi war, "It was a task from God."Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion.

She does not believe women who are raped and incested and ripped open against their will should have a right to determine whether they have their rapist's baby or not.She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control. I imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how many babies that makes.

Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I gather she has tried to ban books from the library, has a tendency to dispense with people who think independently. She cannot tolerate an environment of ambiguity and difference. This is a woman who could and might very well be the next president of the United States. She would govern one of the most diverse populations on the earth.Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom Austrian hunting rifle. She has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip. She has shot hundreds of wolves from the air.

Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right, her private right. But when God and Guns come together in the public sector, when war is declared in God's name, when the rights of women are denied in his name, that is the end of separation of church and state and the undoing of everything America has ever tried to be.

I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold this election in our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the future not just of the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine whether we create policies to save the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for humans. It will determine whether we move towards dialogue and diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence through invasion, undermining and attack. It will determine whether we go for oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest our money in alternatives that will free us from dependency and destruction. It will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare or whether we build more and more methods of killing. It will determine whether America is a free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear, fundamentalism and aggression.

If the Polar Bears don't move you to go and do everything in your power to get Obama elected then consider the chant that filled the hall after Palin spoke at the RNC, "Drill Drill Drill." I think of teeth when I think of drills. I think of rape. I think of destruction. I think of domination. I think of military exercises that force mindless repetition, emptying the brain of analysis, doubt, ambiguity or dissent. I think of pain.

Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the floor of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between nations and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing we call life?

OMG this piece blew my mind! I am very impressed by how well this student dancer handled such a difficult piece. It was in complete silence and the emotional charge of it was crazy!!

i did the lighting for most of the concert...except this one (and two others, not pictured in this blog)... this is one of the very first student designed ANYTHINGs at Kingwood... i was the student's Advisor... yeah, i pushed some lighting buttons - i couldnt resist...

I went to the Bitch and The Exciting Conclusion concert last night. it was a night filled with the energy of strength and revolution and woman... in the end, i was surrounded by a chanting mass of beautiful and empowered women screaming the words "MANifest this Mother Fucker!"

For weeks and weeks, and months and months I have been so sad and frustrated with the LACK of protest and the overwhelming feeling of apathy. Last night eased me... Last night i was reminded that WE are here, still fighting. We cry for justice. We cry for movement. We are at WAR... right here, on our soil... if only the "masses" could wake up and smell the fires burning. Let's add more fuel to those fires and come together (male and female) and breathe the power of pussy!

((i know you my not have heard me speak like this and that some of you will cringe at some of the words i have chosen to use... but, get over it! when i refer to the power of pussy, i refer to the power of change, of birth, of REgeneration, of kindness, and of passion... come with me on this ride to freedom from patriarchy and capitalism and a sudo-DICKtatorship.. come with me and be strong!))

A lesbian pair will be the first same-sex couple to marry in a Greek civil ceremony next week, taking advantage of a loophole in a 1982 law that fails to specify gender for civil unions.

The couple will be married by the mayor of the Kessariani quarter of Athens, who belongs to the radical liberal Syriza party, Agence France-Press reported Thursday.

Gay rights activists said that had the mayor refused to perform the ceremony, they would have petitioned the Greek Council of State.

The wedding announcement comes a day after Olke -- Greece's top gay rights group -- announced that they would appeal to the government for same-sex marriage and adoption rights for gays and lesbians, as well as denounce a proposed bill that would limit unions exclusively to heterosexuals
