so... what's new with me?

I HAVE A NEW COMPUTER!!!! And it's damn cool! I bought a Sony Viao FE880e/h which comes with the new Windows Vista operating system that is really slick and MAC-like. I know I know... I have a copy-cat computer (thanks Dena), BUT, it is soooo beefy in such a light weight body - only 6.14lbs!

The hard drive is 160 GB, the memory is 2 GB and it has an Intel Centrino Duo Processor that is so fast it blows my mind. Also, it comes with a built in Web camera and microphone (although, I don’t know where the mic is...), and two buttons that I can program anything into.

Call it an early graduation gift to myself.

Here's a link to view it!

My other laptop (which I am prep-ing to send to my mom) is still a good computer, but it was slowly crapping out on me. And in my field, and with these potential Assistant gigs I have coming up, I really needed a computer that would not only run my programs, but run them fast and smoothly (and it won’t hurt to have my bosses say "wow, cool computer"). Thus, the new buy. The only stipulation I gave myself was that I would not spend over $2000, and even after the 4 year Accidental Damage warranty added, I stayed within my budget.

I must say that I am grateful for Dena. Even though she won’t stop calling my new computer "Copy-Cat" she helped me make sure it wasn’t just an impulse buy (which I have been known to do). Dena is so wonderful… period, but especially when it comes to balancing me out. Thank you, sweets.

So, the other craziness that is happening with me has to do with my right eye… it randomly started hurting (badly) and turned/is very red. It was hurting so badly that I went to campus health so they could take a look… well… first they asked me if I was pregnant… then they asked if I was sure… then they dumped about 5 gallons of liquid into it so that it would go numb. The doc says “if it stops hurting, then it a surface issue.” I think that was supposed to help. It didn’t.

The next step was to dump another 5 gallons of a different liquid into my eye. Now this liquid comes with props. After putting that stuff into my eye, his assistant (yes he had one) pulls out a black light… I know what you’re thinking, and no, we did not have a rave. He says, “This liquid reacts to black light so if there are any scratches or burns on the surface of your eye, they will glow more brightly.” Sounds like fun, eh? WRONG! I don’t feel very comfortable with the idea of putting some radioactive crap into my eye… MY EYE! Without which, I would not have a job!!! My career would be over and my education would be for nothing!!! This is why I take my eyes seriously.

Needless to say, the doc says… “Well, that’s all we can do here, at campus health, and I can’t figure out what’s going on there.” There. Like my eye has its own zip code. After 3 hours of waiting, it took an ocean’s worth of liquid and about 5 minutes for this guy to say… “I have no fucking clue, here’s a referral, have a nice day!”

So, tomorrow I will be going to an eye doctor and hopefully it’s all ok…

That’s enough ranting for now… I take solace in the fact that I am typing this post with MY NEW COMPUTER!!!!! …….she needs a name……..

drum role please.......

above, you see one of my renderings from my Master's Report project... oh, if you don't already know, a Master's Report project is a conceptual design for a theatrical piece (play, musical, opera). My assignment was Metamorphoses, A Play by Mary Zimmerman. The scene depicted above is that of Eros being awakened by Psyche... it's my favorite. The play is about the struggle thru live to follow your heart (basically)... needless to say, i just received the evaluation of my project and it was.....

"The project presented is complete and of good quality for that of a third-year graduate student. The evaluator recommends and the faculty concurs that the student should receive a grade of superior."

Woo hoo!!!! I guess that means i can graduate! how do i feel? well, it's great to know that all of that hard work paid off. To receive so many compliments from a professor that has had nothing of quality to say to me for 3 years, is astonishing and gratifying. i am almost at the point of tears, actually.

another quote:

"The eight storyboards provided were some of the highest caliber images I have seen produced primarily by electronic means. Your choice of scenes was very good. The sense of light in these is good and your ideas for the individual scenes seem very appropriate."

I am so excited! i am actually going to be a M.F.A. graduate! now i just need to find a job....
