The Holiday Seasons are here!

And my wish to all of my beloved friends and family... keep your hearts warm, your spirit joyous, and your arms in a loving embrace. I love you all! Happy Holidays!! ~Kali

On the first day of winter,
the earth awakens to the cold touch of itself.
Snow knows no other recourse except
this falling, this sudden letting go
over the small gnomed bushes, all the emptying trees.
Snow puts beauty back into the withered and malnourished,
into the death-wish of nature and the deliberate way
winter insists on nothing less than deference.
waiting all its life, snow says, "Let me cover you."

Fruit Fly Pride?

So, my question is... well, i have a couple of questions:

1. What drove scientists to research the genetics of fruit flies? I mean, were the little flies having a loud and proud parade?

1b. What kind of floats would fruit flies build?

1c. Is that why they're called FRUIT flies? that's not very nice...

2. Why would scientists be studying flies?? SERIOUSLY??? FLIES??? they aren't even within the human spectrum of existance!!

3. If you kill a fruit fly... are you commiting a hate crime??

Original Article from The Advocate...

Study finds gay gene in fruit flies

Researchers in Chicago have discovered a gene that identifies homosexuality in fruit flies, which can be turned on and off with drugs. David Featherstone, a biologist at the University of Illinois, said that while humans have a similar gene, it has yet to be determined whether that gene has any effect on same-sex attractions in humans.

Researchers have found that fruit flies with a mutated "gender-blind" gene are bisexual. The flies cannot tell the difference between male and female pheromones, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The mutation strengthens synapses, causing the flies to overreact to the pheromones. This causes the fruit flies to be attracted to both males and females.

"The [gender-blind] mutant males treated other males exactly the same way normal male flies would treat a female," Featherstone said in the article. "They even attempted copulation."

The study tested the hypothesis by giving the bisexual fruit flies drugs that weakened their synapses. Within hours the flies engaged exclusively in heterosexual activity. The group also gave heterosexual flies drugs that strengthened their synapses, causing them to be attracted to both male and female flies.

Survival of the Fittest

This is the most amzing thing ever! Please, read on!! There can only be one!!!

Survival of the Fittest

"Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels.

Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round.

I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world.

Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment.

When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3x5 card reading, "Please use this M&M for breeding purposes."

This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this "grant money." I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion."

There can be only one!!

"Bush sends letter to NKorean leader"

Arizona considers offering domestic partner benefits to state employees

Arizona is close to offering health and other benefits to domestic partners of state employees, both gay and straight, according to a story in The Arizona Republic.

The change in policy, supported by Governor Janet Napolitano, would apply to about 65,000 current employees of the state government and public universities, as well as about 9,000 retirees covered by the state's health plan.

"It's something that most of the other private corporations and large cities are doing, and it's time state government started doing it," Tim Nelson, general counsel to the governor, told The Arizona Republic. "It's something the governor believes strongly is the right thing to do."

State Department of Administration Director Bill Bell filed the proposal for domestic partner benefits on November 7 with the Secretary of State's Office. It was published Friday along with the secretary of state's registry of proposed rules.

Citizens are likely to have less than 30 days to comment on the proposed change, after which a hearing will be scheduled. The governor's six-member Regulatory Review Council will make the final decision on the plan.

Arizona Senate majority leader Thayer Verschoor, a Republican, described the plan as a "slippery slope" toward government acceptance on variations of traditional marriage.

"I think it's going to be met with a lot of resistance," he told The Arizona Republic. (The Advocate)

family...

this is the first poem i've written in a long while. i dont think it's finished yet, but it illustrates the image well...

there are just so damn many of them
viciously beating against the glass walls of my illusions
making faces and drawing obscenities in their foggy breath

running frantically in my dome of glass searching
for shallow corners to hide in
clumsily tripping over misconceptions and forgotten dreams

I am lost.

the depth of my perception falters
my glass armor vanishes
exposed and isolated in this sea of anger and spite

they rapidly close in
blocking any possibility of light
shrinking into a dark infinity

I am lost.

Yay Feminist Nobel Winner!!

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - British novelist Doris Lessing won the 2007 Nobel Prize for literature on Thursday for a body of work that looked unflinchingly at society's ills and inspired a generation of feminist writers.

The Swedish Academy, which awards the 10 million crown ($1.54 million) prize, called the 87-year-old an "epicist of the female experience, who with skepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilization to scrutiny."

The oldest person to win a Nobel for literature, Lessing was only the 34th female laureate since the prizes began in 1901 and the 11th woman to take the literature award.
Lessing was shopping when the news of her Nobel broke and learned of it from reporters gathered outside her London house.

She said the prize had dealt her the literary equivalent of the best possible hand in poker.
"I've won all the prizes in Europe, every bloody one. I'm delighted to win them all, the whole lot," she told reporters as she sat on her front steps.
"It's a royal flush."

Lessing said an official connected with the Nobels once came up to her at a "very, very formal dinner" in Sweden and told her she would never win the prize.
"Can you imagine the cheek?" she said. "What am I to say? 'Oh dear, I'm so sorry, why don't you like me?"'

CONSIDERED DECISION
Horace Engdahl, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said Lessing's work had been of great importance to other writers and to the broader field of literature.
"She has been a subject for discussion (by the academy) for quite some time, and now the moment was right. Perhaps we could say that she is one of the most carefully considered decisions in the history of the Nobel Prize," he told Reuters after announcing Lessing had won.
"She has opened up a new area of experience that earlier had not been very accepted in literature. That has to do with, for instance, female sexuality."
Academics and writers called the honor well deserved.

"She is a great figure, she certainly deserved it," fellow novelist Umberto Eco, whose books include the successful "Name of the Rose," said at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Jane Friedman, chief executive of Lessing publisher HarperCollins, called the Nobel a complete surprise.

"This is absolutely extraordinary," she told Reuters in Frankfurt. "She has been an icon for women for a lifetime."

Lessing, born to British parents in what is now Iran on October 22, 1919, was raised in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.

She went to a convent boarding school at the age of seven and later moved to a girls' school in Salisbury, Rhodesia. After ending her formal schooling at 14, she worked variously as a nanny, telephonist, office worker and journalist.

Her debut as a novelist came in 1950 with "The Grass is Singing," a book that examined the relationship between a white farmer's wife and her black servant.

Her 1962 work "The Golden Notebook" was widely considered her breakthrough.
"The burgeoning feminist movement saw it as a pioneering work and it belongs to the handful of books that informed the 20th century view of the male-female relationship," the academy said in its citation.

Lessing, who has never shrunk from controversy, said her next work -- "Alfred and Emily" -- was an anti-war book dedicated to her parents, whose lives were forever changed by World War One.

This was the fourth of this year's crop of Nobel prizes, handed out annually for achievements in science, literature, economics and peace.
The winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday in Oslo

on a serious note

wow. i actually fired my carpenter today. i have never fired anyone before. i don't like the feeling. what sucks is that i really like the guy, but his work ethic is horrible! he started out as a student worker, then got bumped up to Carpenter the year before I got here. He learned under my predecessor... hence the shoddy work and lack of professionalism.

He's a 21 year old that really needs to shape up, especially after finding out this type of work is what he wants to do for the rest of his life. i don't think he believed me when i told him that i can get him into some really good companies when he's ready - if he could just kick it into gear... he couldn't, apparently.

i feel bad. i feel like i could have helped him become really good. did i give up to soon? i don't think so. but, who knows.

any advice from anyone who's fired someone? how do you deal?

Happy Birthday to me!!

As i sit here and ponder life (as i have been known to do), i realize that this is the first birthday since high school that i have not had to work! Some of you may say.... "well, that's pretty lazy thinking," but no no no my dear friend! it's just wonderful! I get to spend the day with my wonderful grrl friend! And we have many fun things planned... not to mention that she got me such an awesome gift! all i have to say is BLING!!

But really, just being in dena's presence (and not having to worry about tech rehearsals or stupid directors or even dumber actors who can't find there damn light... but really it’s being with dena…) makes me feel at peace with my life and the world.

Your Values Profile

You're loyal to your friends... to a point.
But if they cross you, you will reconsider your loyalties.
Staying true to others is important to you, but you also stay true to yourself.

Honesty:

You value honesty a fair amount.
You're honest when you can be, but you aren't a stickler for it.
If a little white lie will make a situation more comfortable, you'll go for it.
In the end, you mostly care about "situational integrity."

Generosity:

You value generosity a fair amount.
You are all about giving, as long as there's some give and take.
Supportive and kind, you don't mind helping out a friend in need.
But you know when you've given too much. You have no problem saying "no"!

Humility:

You value humility a fair amount.
You tend to be an easy going, humble person.
But occasionally your ego takes over.
You have a slight competitive streak - and the need to be the best.

Tolerance:

You value tolerance highly.
Not only do you enjoy the company of those very different from you...
You do all that you can to seek it out interesting and unique friends.
You think there are many truths in life, and you're open to many of them.
