on a serious note

wow. i actually fired my carpenter today. i have never fired anyone before. i don't like the feeling. what sucks is that i really like the guy, but his work ethic is horrible! he started out as a student worker, then got bumped up to Carpenter the year before I got here. He learned under my predecessor... hence the shoddy work and lack of professionalism.

He's a 21 year old that really needs to shape up, especially after finding out this type of work is what he wants to do for the rest of his life. i don't think he believed me when i told him that i can get him into some really good companies when he's ready - if he could just kick it into gear... he couldn't, apparently.

i feel bad. i feel like i could have helped him become really good. did i give up to soon? i don't think so. but, who knows.

any advice from anyone who's fired someone? how do you deal?

know that you did the best you could. i find it hard to believe you didn't give him every chance and/or opportunity. i'm sure you thought long and hard about your decision. in my job, where we take people's kids away, sometimes for life, we have to understand that we have given the parents every opportunity we could. but in the end, it is always up to them to decide to make the change or not.

you did the right thing. it's never easy...
